    Creating Spaces for Belonging

A Northern Ireland Poetry Therapy Interest Group Workshop

    Date: 9 th May 2026 1.30pm- 4.30pm

Venue: The Hub, The MAC Theatre, 10 Exchange Street, West, Belfast BT1 2NJ

    https://themaclive.com/

This workshop takes place during the NI Mental Health Arts Festival, and explores the

festival theme of Belonging. “Creating Spaces for Belonging” is for anyone who would benefit from some creative space and opportunities to connect with other people with an interest in creativity and wellbeing. Do you dance, draw, write, make art of any kind, or just enjoy poetry, music, film, art, dance and any other art forms? This workshop will offer a variety of ways to express yourself creatively and to experience a sense of belonging to a creative community.

We will participate in individual and collaborative writing and art activities and share our

reflections on the processes of creativity. Prompts will include poems, inspiring quotes and images, and guided activities in the current exhibitions in the MAC’s galleries. Your

responses can take the form of writing, art or anything else. Sharing your creations will be optional and the need for personal space will be respected. The atmosphere will be calm and non-judgemental.

This workshop is suitable for writers and artists of all levels of experience, or anyone

interested in creativity. Therapists who would like to develop their personal and/or

professional practice are also welcome. Therapists may claim a certificate with CPD hours for the workshop (please request this when booking for the workshop).

You will receive a set of inspiring poems and quotations on the theme of belonging to take away with you.

    Please bring along

    1. a notebook and a pen and anything else that you find useful for capturing your ideas, such as a sketchbook and drawing materials. Art materials will be available, but you are welcome to bring your own as well.

    2. an object which represents an aspect of belonging for you. For example: a photograph, an item of clothing or something else with a logo on it, an item from your home, or something from nature.
